What advice could you give me for a timing problem ? Thanks.
I would suggest a couple different things. First, make sure you have the correct speed of music for particular dances (fast vs. slow, feis speeds, etc). Then, listen to the music and count it out in 8’s (123 and 223, 323, and 423, 523, 623, 723, 823, or whatever) and just do that over and over. Also, break down and drill parts to whatever count they match with. For your steps, remember that right foot is 8 counts, left is 8, right 8, left 8, etc for however many steps (unless you’ve a half step/whatever).
Another thing that’s really helped me is getting a metronome (or just a metronome app for your ipod/phone/etc) and setting it to whatever particular speed and timing (4/4, 6/8, etc - this depends on the dance) you need and practicing to that.
Basic music/dance counting with time signatures
4/4 = counted as 4 beats per bar (Reels, hornpipes)
6/8 (3/4) = counted as 2 beats per bar (Treble jigs, light jigs, and single jigs)
